The Cultural Association for Antonio Tabucchi intends to develop the undertaking, carried out in the last six years, of a group of Tabucchi’s friends, together with the town of Vecchiano. They committed themselves to render the knowledge of both the person and the work of Antonio Tabucchi accessible, as well as facilitating the reading of his works and providing their personal contribution to accomplish, within the municipality of Vecchiano, the project of hosting the library which used to belong to the author’s home, purchased by the City Hall in 2016.
On the day of the funeral, which has taken place in Lisbon, the town of Vecchiano proclaimed a day of civil mourning and organized a ceremony in commemoration of Tabucchi at the Cinema Teatro Olimpia. Many people took part in the event, promoted by Prof. Ovidio Della Croce; among them, the writer and friend Athos Bigongiali, Prof. Luca Curti, Prof. Antonella Galanti. Giancarlo Lunardi, at the time mayor of Vecchiano, said: “The fondness and friendship Antonio felt for Vecchiano were immense. Especially in view of this, we wanted to gracefully remember him on the day of his funeral taking place in Lisbon. In the near future, we will organize initiatives that are equally important to remember Tabucchi, a citizen of Vecchiano and a great contemporary writer”.
Since then, thanks to the impulse of the mayor and the local authority of arts and entertainment Daniela Canarini, a Committee for Tabucchi has been formed.
Since 2012, the City Hall of Vecchiano, together with the group for Tabucchi and his family, his wife Maria José de Lancastre and his children Michele and Teresa, has organized a series of events with authors, students, readings, screenings, and shows performed by artists from all over the world, people who meet in Vecchiano to chronicle the life and work of Antonio Tabucchi.
